After seeing the neo-noir trailer for Gucci’s perfume “Guilty” I thought it would be appropriate to preview the trailer here, given the content of my site. I’ve always admired ad campaigns that shoot elaborate and stylized videos. I think a scent alone can tell a story and this trailer has a beautiful way of enticing the consumer into a glamorous and deviant world that beckons you to unleash your most dangerous and seductive alter ego.
Directed by the legendary graphic novelist Frank Miller, the trailer is shot in the desaturated style of Sin City, a movie that has always been personal favorite of mine. The gray scale lighting and sleek futuristic car are reminiscent of Batman, which only further peaked my interest and added to the overall edginess of the imagery.
Guilty is described as being a sensual scent for women who are daring, sexy, brave and glamorous. The perfume contains notes of mandarin, pink pepper, peach, lilac, geranium, amber and patchouli. Set to release in September 2010, Gucci is offering the chance to win passes to the MTV awards where the featured perfume and directors cut of the trailer will launch. Considering Queen Sophie-Anne has a distinct 1940′s style, I thought it would be appropriate to cover her next in the series. There are only so many vampire looks that don’t overlap one another, so I thought this look could be a great everyday, pinup look for all of you vintage lovers. I will be doing a hair tutorial for her character sometime in the future, so look out for that soon. If you have any specific vampire looks you want to request, please leave a comment below.

I had the great opportunity to work on a photo shoot last month and given the vintage theme, I thought I’d share my experience on set with all of my subscribers and fellow pin up lovers. The talented photographer Christopher O’Driscoll approached me to work on a dual themed photo shoot and since I had worked with him before, of course I obliged. I’ve always admired his keen eye for photography, so I was very excited to see what we could come up with as a collaborative team. We agreed that the aesthetic of the photos would be an homage to a photo shoot that Kate Winslet had appeared in for Vanity Fair. I have always loved that particular spread, so I was excited to be apart of the recreation process.

For the makeup I wanted to recreate Kate’s sultry look using the same neutral brown tones. Kate’s tousled hair and smokey makeup reminded me a lot of Brigitte Bardot and the days of celebrated sex kittens, so I kept it vintage with a classic winged liner and strong brow. As for the face I contoured the cheeks, temples and jawline and used a soft peach blush to keep the face looking as natural as possible. For the lips I used a soft nude color to create a plumped appearance, further adding to the femininity of the theme.
For the second part of the shoot, Sherry and Chris wanted to conjure up the spirit of a sexy femme fatale and do a couple of film noir shots. Any of you that watch my channel, know that I live and breathe film noir and old Hollywood style. I was ecstatic to be apart of something so close to my heart and just seeing the amount of detail and choreography that went into the shots, was awe inspiring. For this particular look I kept the eyes the same, only adding a bit of black shadow to to create more depth and drama. I changed the lips to a dark red and added a bit of red gloss for some high shine. I was honored to have helped direct the shoot, lending some of my ideas for poses and I think this one turned out quite nicely.
In conclusion, the shoot was a great success and it was a pleasure to work with both Sherry and Chris for the day. The few hours spent on set slipped by without notice, with a couple of wardrobe changes and a few laughs in between. It couldn’t have been a smoother work day and I enjoyed collaborating on something that I share such a strong passion for. Located in Toronto Canada, BALMSHELL is a fun and flirty cosmetics line created by identical twins Jennifer and Fiona Lees. I was recently approached by the lovey Karyn Johnson to review a few of their glosses and with a glamorous name like BALMSHELL, I just had to give them a try. I chose two glosses, one sheer hot cherry red shade entitled “Darling You Look Fabulous” and a soft retro mauve called “That’s so 80′s”. I really love experimenting with unique shades, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to play around with something little more daring than your average nude gloss.
Founders of BALMSHELL - Fiona and Jennifer Lees
The glosses are listed for $22 each and include a detachable top that contains a unique piece of flow art inside. I think this is a rather playful addition and would make a wonderful gift for anyone who loves to collect nostalgic packaging. The illustrations are all created by Mar Murube, whose art can also be seen in magazines such as Elle, Vogue and In Style. Along with their array of glosses, they also have a lip and cheek gel known as the smear campaign. Not only do their products look eye catching and chic, but they have the most beautiful, sweet vanilla scent as well.
Ingredients:
* Jojoba oil – brings moisture to the lips.
* Lanolin oil – locks in moisture.
* Perfume-free, flavored with a hint of natural fruity vanilla.
Another positive aspect is their non-sticky texture. I know a lot of women avoid cakey lip glosses that feel heavy on the lips, so if you’re looking for a lightweight yet build-able gloss, then this is the perfect investment. Something to note about these glosses is that some of them are not as pigmented as they appear in the tube. So, don’t be intimidated to experiment with the wide selection of colors they have to offer. The shades range everywhere from neutral pink tones to bolder, raspberry shades and everything else in between. If you would like to purchase some of their products or learn more about the company please check out their official website.
