Freak is the first fragrance to launch from British cosmetic brand Illamasqua in 2011. I’ve been a long time admirer of their makeup line so I was ecstatic to hear that they would also be releasing a perfume. I avoided temptation for some time before receiving a sample in the mail with one of my Illamasqua packages. I eagerly doused myself in the fragrance and danced through the plunging mist much to the chagrin of those around me. I instantly fell in love with the headiness and warmth of it. Needless to say ‘Freak’ has quickly become my choice fall and winter scent!
Illamasqua Freak Perfume Review

Available in both 30 ml and 75ml.

Price: Illamasqua’s Freak retails for $130.00 CAD per 75 ml bottle. The 30ml bottle lists at $74.50 CAD.

Packaging: Illamasqua’s ‘Freak’ fragrance initially captured my attention with it’s ornate and striking design. I am known to have a soft spot for beautiful packaging so naturally I couldn’t help but be enamored by the purple stained glass bottle, whimsical silver snail and decorative scrawling text. I think it’s a stunning addition to any vanity, especially for those whom have darker sensibilities.

Wear time: Although it varies from person to person and is dependent on how much is applied, I find it lasts approximately 5-7 hours on my skin.

Illamasqua Freak Fragrance

Scent Description: Freak is composed by Agent Provocateur perfumer Azzi Glasser and was inspired by exotic night blooming flowers. Initially, it unfolds on the skin as a heavy serenade of white florals and earthy resin. This lasts about an hour or so until the fragrance starts to evolve into a complex embrace of warmer incense notes at it’s core. At first, Freak appears more feminine but as it begins to dry down the sweetness softens and transitions into a more smokey, masculine aroma. This is where the Frankincense, Oud an Myrrh truly shine. The hearty foundation of this scent reminds me of a night blooming garden cut with the crispness of the fall breeze and the whirling undercurrent of incense.

Top Notes:
Black Davana, Opium Flower and Belladonna.

Heart Notes:
Poison Hemlock, Datura and Queen of the Night blossom.

Base Notes
Frankincense, Oud and Myrrh.

Illamasqua Freak Fragrance Review

What I Like:

Longevity – I like to acquire perfumes that possess a bit of longevity which has proven to be a difficult feat so far. When I was first introduced to Illamasqua’s ‘Freak’ through a sample in the mail I instantly spritzed a tiny amount on my neck to see how long it would last on my skin. I was pleasantly surprised to still catch a faint whiff of it lingering on my clothes the next day. Perhaps it is a testament to its potent ingredients but I’ve yet to find a perfume that lasts quite as long.

Theme – The symbolism of the snail perched on the side of the bottle is actually quite pertinent. I like that Illamasqua chose to utilize an often misunderstood creature to market their scent. It’s a strong homage to the ideology that even things that are different or strange can still be perceived as beautiful. It’s a wonderful call to action. Embrace your strangeness, your inner freak and celebrate that uniqueness that lies within us all.

Versatility – The addition of burnt orange blossom in this fragrant concoction is said to enhance the wearers natural scent. I adore the idea of owning a perfume that is somewhat tailored to me. While there are a lot of fragrances on the market  it can sometimes be frustrating to find a signature scent that isn’t  incredibly common. Even though ‘ Freak’ has become a highly touted perfume among the beauty community it still has the added benefit of  playing off of your own chemistry making it a unique and tailored experience for all those who wear it.

What I don’t Like:

Availability/price – The only complaint I have about this perfume is how difficult it is to purchase for those who live overseas. With Illamasqua making a brief appearance in Canada I was able to get my hands on the 75ml bottle. The Bay was having a clearance sale after the counter shut down so I got it for half the regular retail price. I dread having to purchase it online with the Canadian conversion and added international shipping costs.

Where to Buy: At your local Illamasqua counter or on their official website.

Rating: Longevity: 5/5 Price – 3.5/5 Scent – 5

Thank you for taking the time to stop by! Let me know in the comments below if you’ve tried Illamasqua’s ‘Freak’ perfume and what your thoughts are on it. If not, what is your signature scent that you simply can’t live without? I always love exploring new fragrances to add to my ever expanding perfume wardrobe so a few new suggestions would be much appreciated!
