1960′s Bombshell Hair Tutorial

I’ve always loved this particular sixties hairstyle. It is diverse as it is classic and can be applied to so many different styles. Whether you want to opt for an effortless,  feminine summer hairstyle or a darker autumn runway  look this style  can easily be toned down for work or dramatized for a sultry night on the town. I think utilizing hairstyles with this kind of versatility allows room for invention and creativity. Wear it with pearls or a leather jacket and you can completely shift the mood of your entire ensemble.

I like the fact that there is minimum tools and product needed to achieve this look. Some hairstyles seem so complicated and expensive, so this is certainly something anyone can do at home without the help of a salon. There are also countless variations you can touch on in terms of height, amount of curls or whether you tie it back in a half or low ponytail. You can add accessories such as gilded broaches, ornate clips or even flowers.

Harley Quinn escapes from Arkham Asylum to paint the town red.

Emerging from an almost one year hiatus I decided to touch on a series that is especially close to my heart. There isn’t a person I know that doesn’t posess some kind of child like sentiment for Batman. So, what better way to celebrate my homecoming than to touch on something as bold and nostalgic as the Dark Knight? I had promised all of you that I would do a tutorial for Catwoman a few weeks ago, but I am still waiting on the mask I’ve ordered so I can really capture the true essence of her character. I decided I would showcase another Gotham villain in the mean time that has as much spunk and unpredictability as a fourth of July firecracker; Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

In light of the several incarnations that Batman characters have gone through over the years I thought it would be a great idea to eventually recreate all of them. Everything from the classic looks to the modern movie remakes and even looks of my own creation will be present in the series, so look out for this in the near future. I think this way it will will feel more complete, all while catering to the many different Batman fans out there. Anyone that watches my videos knows that I am a stickler for detail and authenticity so I hope that my interpretation of Harley lives up to her larger than life personality.

Earthy Smoke Makeup Tutorial

For this video I thought I would do something a little different and show you how I apply makeup on a model, as opposed to myself. I think it’s inspiring to see how diverse makeup can look on other people, depending on their coloring and facial features. My sister and I are fairly different in that respect so I thought showcasing something a little softer, might be helpful to those of you whom opt for a more subtle approach to makeup.

Interview with Alex Cummins: Junior Brand Manager of Illamasqua

I’ve had the pleasure of conversing with the lovely Alex Cummins  on a fairly regular basis and I finally got the opportunity to ask her a few questions regarding her favorite products, inspirations and work with Illamasqua.  I noticed a lot of beauty related interviews always touch on the supposed front runners in the industry such as models and photographers, but they rarely shed light on the individuals that contribute to the magic that occurs behind the scenes.  I think Alex’s sense of ambition for someone so young  is inspiring. In light of this, I  thought I would showcase how her passion, expertise and creativity have made all the difference in becoming a successful junior brand manager and all around respected beauty enthusiast.  I hope you enjoy reading her insights as much as I have.

Sylvia Lancaster, Courtney Love and Alex Cummins.

Ashley: What is it about the beauty industry that inspired you to become apart of it all?

AC: I have always loved make-up, cheesy as it sounds! I used to create looks on my friends at school, from the age of about 8 when I was experimenting with blue eye liners on my lips and red lipstick on my cheeks! I have a huge interest in the production of photo shoots, too – the inspirations, the brief, the brand values, the hair, the make-up, the nails, the clothes, the set, the photographer, the photographic style, the post production, the final images and where those images end up fascinates me. I had David la Chapelle, Man Ray and Nick Knight photos all over my walls growing up alongside the work of Pat McGrath, Max Factor and of course – Alex Box.

Ashley: What does a junior brand manager’s job entail?

AC: I oversee the digital marketing side of the brand, PR, events management, a bit of this, a bit of that.  I think in my time at the company I’ve dipped my finger in every proverbial pie so I have a great understanding of the brand, where it has come from and hopefully where it is going! I have been with the company for 2.5 years so pretty much since the launch in November 2008.

Ashley: How did you start working for Illamasqua?

AC: I’ve always loved to research. I won’t buy a book without reading at least five reviews, I won’t buy a shampoo unless I’ve had a personal recommendation, and I wouldn’t go to a bar without checking out Timeout.com first! So once I realised I had a pretty damn full bag of make-up, it was going to take a lot to make me buy more, which is how I discovered blogs and forums which would give me real, honest views on products and what was working, what was just hype. So I started writing my own blog to contribute to the greater dialogue in March 2008. I attended the launch of Illamasqua in November and wrote about how inspiring it was to me in what had become a tepid, predictable industry save for a few brands. I was bored, I needed inspiration and an injection of colour and celebration of art and Illamasqua provided that! After I had written my review, the MD at the time read my blog and invited me in for an interview as I was looking for a job having finished my degree.

Ashley: What inspires you the most in your line of work?

AC: I’m still an experimenter, I like to challenge myself and my products! I’ve mixed our Pure Pigment in Furore [a champagne shade] in to clear lipgloss today. It’s pretty eye catching in the London sunshine! I like to mingle with a variety of different people and open my self up to new things on a cultural level constantly. I am as likely to be found in an underground night club in Shoreditch with a dirty martini as I am in the National Gallery with a chamomile tea. I like to experience things and opening yourself up to that inevitably inspires you and gives you a greater bank of images and experiences in your mind to draw upon. It’s great watching the Product Development team brainstorming new collections and being able to chip in with suggestions based on things that you have seen.

Ashley: What advice would you give to others that aspire to work in a similar field?

AC: Be prepared to start at the bottom and work hard. Proving yourself a valuable asset to a team will always make things happen for yuou. I lived and breathed make-up and I worked over and above my hours to prove I had what it took to work for Illamasqua.

Ashley: What is the most memorable person you have met during your time working in the beauty industry?

AC: Sylvia Lancaster – without a shadow of a doubt. She is extremely inspiring. Her daughter Sophie Lancaster was murdered for the way she looked, and yet her killers did not get sentenced for a hate crime – it was seen as an isolated incident. Apparently, being murdered for the clothes you choose to wear isn’t on the same level as being murdered for your race or sexuality. It’s absolutely insane and something that Illamasqua is working hard to change with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation charity that Sylvia runs. I think Sylvia is very brave and a strong woman for going through what she went through and working so hard to keep her daughters memory alive with the work of the charity. As a brand that promotes the right to experiment and self-express through the way you look, Illamasqua is committed to changing attitudes towards subcultures.

Ashley: Where would you ultimately love to see your career go in the next five years?

AC: I would definitely still want to be at Illamasqua – the team dynamic and the brand are fantastic to work for. I started with a very small team and we now have about 25 in our Head Office and over 100 artists world wide. I would love to help develop Illamasqua globally – maybe Brand Director in New York? One can wish.

Ashley:  What products could you not live without?

AC: From Illamasqua, the Sealing Gel keeps everything locked in place [great for my morning spinning session!], Intense Lipgloss in Indulge is a very bright pink lipgloss that is strong yet doesn’t bleed at all and Nail Varnishes in Baptiste, Phallic, Scorn and Throb are my favourites. Cream Pigments are great too, I am having real fun experimenting with those – Emerge really is the lovelist blush. I am also really looking forward to the launch of our new Skin Base foundations. I really can’t rave about that enough.

I Love SkinCeuticals products for my face, it’s techy whilst still being eco conscious. The face wash and serum are particularly divine. I also love Cow Shed candles – I got my first flat recently and it’s always filled with flowers and candles!

Ashley: What is your go-to makeup look for a night on the town?

AC: I mix it up. I don’t have just the one alter ego! I am influenced by popular culture and Golden Hollywood, so I have two wardrobes lined with cut outs of magazines with make-up looks that I like. I just have to open the doors and decide on which one I am going to take as that days influence, it makes things a lot less stressful! I’m a Virgo through and through!

Ashley: What is your favorite makeup launch from Illamasqua to date and why?

AC: We keep building and building on the collections, everyone is a whole new world waiting to be explored, so I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite! I love how excited people get, what products are the real heroes and which ones cause debate. It’s so interesting to know and very useful to us as a brand too – we listen, we take it on board and we develop. It can only get bigger and better from here!

Halloween celebrations at Beak St. Alex Cummins and NPD Assistant Halimah Haque.

I want to take the opportunity to thank Alex for partaking in this interview. I hope this will give all of  you an idea of how much hard work and dedication is required to really become successful in the industry. Keep pursuing your dreams because Alex’s passion and incessant focus is a testament to how possible it really is!

Current Skincare and Foundation Routine

A lot of you have been asking for a rundown of  my current skincare and foundation routine, so here it is! As I have mentioned before my skin is not without its flaws. I have gone through several periods of trial and error to find the best fit for my skin.  Hopefully a little insight into my routine will assist all you dry skinned gals  into finding a more balanced and radiant complexion.

With the No7 Quick Thinking 4 in 1 Wipes  you can rid your face of impurities, tone your skin, remove make-up including waterproof eye make-up, as well as moisturize all in one swipe. Their compact size is suitable for travel and best of all, they’re very inexpensive. I especially love using these  if I’ve come home after a long night and don’t want to go through the hassle of cleansing my face. Normally I would break out if I go  one night without implementing my proper cleansing regime, but these wipes definitely do the trick!

The basis to any good routine is to make sure you hydrate the skin, even if you’re prone to being oily. Lack of moisture will trigger your skin to produce more oil and  make it even more of a task to keep your foundation in place throughout the day.  Out of everything I have tried thus far,  Benefit’s Dear John moisturizer was the most hydrating.  Most moisturizers will state right on the bottle  if they’re meant for dry, oily or normal/combination skin. Otherwise, the rule is generally that any gel-based cleansers or moisturizers are created for more oily skin types and  rich and creamy moisturizers and cleansers are best suited for dry skin types. Another great thing about Dear John is that it comes in a 60 ml glass jar which is more than most moisturizers on the market.  The one thing I love about this moisturizer  is how it instantly absorbs into the skin. There is absolutely no greasy feeling or added shine after applying this product which is an added bonus if you’re in a rush and want to apply your primer and foundation immediately afterward.

Benefits:

- Vitamin B5 known to soften skin

- Vitamin E Acetate known to fight free-radicals responsible for skin aging

- Sodium hyaluronate moisturizes skin and locks in moisture

-  Marshmallow root smooths out the surface.

- Cucumber extract includes antioxidant and moisturizing properties.

As for my primer I have been using Skinprep FX Nourishing Foundation primer and Anti-aging serum by Cover FX. It is an “anti-aging” primer that repairs, hydrates and smooths the skin to blur the appearance of fine lines and pores. This particular formula also facilitates blending and extends the wear of your foundation. It is suitable for  normal, sensitive or dry skin types and is oil free, fragrance free and does not contain any parabens. I apply this directly after my moisturizer with a foundation brush or my fingers and it always leaves my skin with a nice glow.

The foundation I have been using recently is Renergie Lift by Lancome in Porcelaine 10 (NC). As we all know, foundation is one of the most crucial products that we can implement into our daily beauty regime. I have tried many different brands over the years  and this has been my favorite one to date. I think it is important to start addressing anti-aging in your early to mid-twenties, so I chose something that would aid in the prevention process, as well as give me high coverage and an overall healthy radiance. The best consistency for dry skin types is a liquid foundation. I have tried using mousse and powder foundations, but they usually leave my skin looking flaky and even more dehydrated. I always apply my foundation with my fingers and usually build up the intensity of the product with a few applications depending on the amount of redness I have. For an extra glow, I usually add a couple of drops of Eclat Miracle Serum of Light Complexion Illuminator By Lancome into the mix before applying.

Benefits:

  • Instantly lifts away the appearance of lines and fights against wrinkles
  • Lets skin breathe and prevents makeup from setting into lines
  • Skin looks smoother, feels firmer
  • Erases signs of fatigue for a flawless, younger-looking and awakened complexion
  • Protects from environmental damage known to cause premature aging.

Technology:

  • Micro Lift Network: extra-fine dispersion of waxes forms an imperceptible shaping network on the surface of the skin, helping to fight against the relaxation of tissues that causes wrinkles.
  • Flexible Micro-Bubbles, act like nanoscopic flexible pockets of air for skin to breath and prevent makeup from setting into lines.
  • Energizing botanicals: blend of caffeine, ivy and corn extract helps stimulate skin to fight against signs of aging.
  • Reflective Micro-pearls play with light to create an optical radiance effect.
  • Pure Vitamin E Nano-capsules and SPF 20 Sunscreen.

As for my concealer I tend to use two different products to acquire an even complexion. For under the eyes my favorite product is the Smashbox HD concealer in Fair.  It utilizes soft focus pearls to deflect light and minimizes the appearance of blemishes and fine lines. I really love how brightening this product is and it is always my go to concealer when I’m feeling especially tired or dark around the eye area. Another perk is how well it transfers on camera. I often use this on photo shoots and it always gives the models a very bright and rested appearance.

For the rest of my face I will always rely on my trusty Erase Paste in number 1 by Benefit. This is one of the best high coverage concealers I have ever come across. It literally has the consistency of a paste, so the amount needed to cover up any discolorations or blemishes, is very little. This concealer will not only last you forever, but it will always get the job done without any added assistance from accompanying products. When applying erase paste, I take advantage of the warmth of my fingers to dab it onto my problematic areas and I find it usually blends into the skin with little to no effort.I know most people with dry skin do not like to set their makeup with a powder, but Setting FX will certainly change your mind on the matter. The formula is so lightweight and provides a diffused and flawless finish. It never looks chalky or dry and still allows the natural radiance of your skincare and foundation to shine through. To apply this, I use a large powder brush and dust it over my entire face to ensure my foundation and concealer stay in place all day.

Last but certainly not least is “Dew Me” Moisturizing Makeup Setting Spray by Urban Decay. I stumbled upon this about a month ago and was instantly impressed. This is the perfect antidote for drier and combination skin types because it moisturizes and holds makeup flawlessly for 16 hours.  It keeps foundation from settling into fine lines and prevents powder from becoming cakey. Just shake the bottle before use and spritz it on after you’ve applied your makeup and you’ll look radiant and hydrated all day!

I hope this helps some of you who have similar skin concerns. Feel free to leave me a comment below if you have any further inquiries!
