Kat Von D Beauty Ink Well Long Wear Matte Eyeliner Review

As a makeup artist and self-proclaimed makeup hoarder, I have spent years trying to find the best performing eyeliner, not only for myself but for my clients as well. I am pretty selective when it comes to repurchasing a specific product, especially liquid eyeliners. I have hooded and oily lids, which makes eyeliner a task to begin with and I also like to create both classic and dramatic wings which require a certain kind of fluid formula and precise applicator.

Kat Von D Beauty was kind enough to send me their new Ink Well Matte liner in the mail a few weeks ago and I was definitely excited to try out the new formula, as the Tattoo liner has been one of my holy grain products for the past several years. If you would like to know how this product performed, keep on reading!

What I Like:

Packaging – It’s no surprise that this product is very sleek and pleasing to look at. The pointed applicator and rounded bottom are reminiscent of the antique quill and ink pot system, as Kat was inspired by the art of calligraphy. I also quite enjoy the matte, black finish and ornate silver lettering. Not only is it a fitting ode to the initial inspiration, but it is aesthetically beautiful as well. Surely, an ornamental piece that you can display on your vanity or in your kit with admiration and pride.

Finish – This eyeliner has a very opaque, matte finish even after one swipe which I really enjoy. Most liners have a slight vinyl appearance so it’s nice to have a pro

duct that can create a lot more definition. I find that matte liner tends to have more depth  and looks more precise on the eye as well.

Longevity – As with all Kat Von D Beauty products, the longevity of this liner has some serious staying power. I swatched it on my hand  after it arrived in the mail and even after several washes and a couple of days, the liner stayed put. It can take a bit of effort to remove, so I suggest using an oil based cleanser to do this more gently.

Transfer-proof – I have fairly hooded eyelids which are also quite oily, so I am used to eyeliners transferring on me at some point in the day. It’s become such a big pet peeve of mine, especially when I’ve spent so much time and effort applying my makeup. I can honestly say that the Ink Well liner does not smudge or transfer on my lids, even when I am sitting in front of hot studio lights for hours on end. If you’re looking for a liner that won’t budge in hot weather, you have oily or hooded eyelids or if you’re on the go and don’t have time to stop and re-apply, this one’s for you!

What I don’t Like:

Quick drying – There is a definite positive side to having this liner be quick drying. We have all been at that point in our makeup routine where we open our eyes too quickly and our eyeliner goes everywhere. This can make or break an eye look, so I do appreciate this aspect for this purpose alone. However, for someone who is less adept at eye liner, it can take some time to create a full line without having to constantly re-dip the applicator into the bottle. It would also be frustrating if  you were attempting to layer over the product and perfect the line, as  some liners with a matte finish have the potential to get crumbly and crack.

Disiloxane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate/Dimethiconol Crosspolymer, Cyclopentasiloxane, Silica, Mica, Cyclohexasiloxane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Silica Silylate, Hydrogen Dimethicone, Propylene Carbonate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Iron Oxides (Ci 77499).

Tips for Use:

– For the best pay off, shake the bottle before each application.
– This liner dries extremely fast so it’s better to work in small strokes, taking it a section at a time.
– To create a thin, more precise line you can work with it by angling the tip down towards the lashes.                                                  —- For a thicker line, you can angle the applicator sideways, laying it against the lash line and then inching it across in small strokes.

Where to Buy: You can purchase this eyeliner online at Kat Von D Beauty’s official site as well as Sephora in store and online.

Verdict: After trying this liner for a couple of weeks, I am really partial to the matte finish. I feel like this gives my liner quite a bit more definition. That being said, I still feel like I grab for my Tattoo liner inTrooper a lot more often. Sometimes I will use them in tandem to create more of a matte outline and fill in the middle with the tattoo liner to a touch of dimension. Overall, I still like the product but I definitely sill prefer the Tattoo liner for everyday use. Have you tried the Ink Well eyeliner yet? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
